A special note

about the 2023-2024 SAT & PSAT

Significant changes were recently announced by The College Board (home to the SAT and the PSAT) and seem aimed to impact both the PSAT/NMSQ exam and the SATs for the 2023-2024 school year.

  • It appears that the SATs that will be given in Fall 2023 will remain the current format, which has been in place since Spring 2016.   The SAT itself should be administered in this known format in August, October, November, and December 2023.   It does not look as though the new SAT format will launch in the United States until the March 2024 exam.  All SATs administered on or after March 9th, 2024 are supposed to be in the new format.

  • However, they are indicating that the PSAT used for National Merit Qualification purposes and scheduled for Fall 2023 will be in the new format.  Although we already know in broad and general terms what will be covered on the exam and can prepare students accordingly based on a combination of past exams and projected materials, the precise parameters of the new format will remain a bit of a surprise until a full-length practice PSAT/NMSQ exam is released.

  • An additional speedbump in PSAT prep is the anticipated change to the date(s) on which the test is offered.  In the past, the PSAT was held on one specific day in the fall – for example, in 2022, it was given at most schools on either Wednesday, October 12th or Saturday, October 15th – with an alternate date option that was used somewhat infrequently.  For this coming year, schools are supposed to be able to administer the PSAT exam at any time of their choosing during the entire month of October, thus ensuring something of a scheduling nightmare when it comes to tutoring.

  • As more and more information becomes available to our tutors about the PSAT scheduled for October 2023 and the SAT next spring, it is possible – perhaps even probable – that there will be changes made to our plans and recommendations.  We will do our best to communicate these updates to our students and their families as we receive additional details.

If you have a senior who would like to take the SAT before the proposed changes take effect, call our office right away!
